The Architecture of Silence

To you, walking down the long corridor,

Welcome to the Storm Post Office. This letter is posted from Ushuaia, March 1991, where the wind on the channel keeps better time than any bell. The envelope is archive paper in the dark green of a clinic wall, printed with the radial plan of a prison. Oxblood pencil notes run down the margins, and a tiny drawing of a locked window hides under a cream index band.

Two centuries ago a man drew up the prospectus for a house like this and opened it with a promise: “Morals reformed—health preserved—industry invigorated … all by a simple idea in Architecture!” — Jeremy Bentham, Panopticon (1791)

We have since learned that silence can be built, too. So here we do one small thing: we leave a door open for the mail. A letter needs no key to reach you. Write slowly; the rain is listening.

May your words pass through walls
