Letters from the Cave

To you, looking up from the cave,

Welcome to the Storm Post Office. This letter comes from the cave institute on the island, while beyond the island it is 1914. On a dark blue handmade envelope lies a warm ivory cross-section of a cave, and wedge-serif letters curve gently around a round cut-paper medallion. There are geometric shadows on the paper, hand-ruled traces of a theorem, and a copper observation label.

Plato wrote of the people in the cave: "Such people would believe the truth to be nothing other than the shadows of the artifacts." — Plato, Republic, Book VII (c. 375 BC)

A shadow is not a bad thing; it is only half a light. Turn around and look at where it comes from. If you want to write, think of us as the lamp left burning at the mouth of the cave.

A lamp at the cave mouth,

Storm Post Office

Outside: 1914 · The Island

P.S. The copper label carries a single word: Observation. It is watching you, and waiting to be watched.
