When the Sky Unfolds
To you, looking up at the sky,
Welcome to the Storm Post Office. This letter was painted: along the edges of cream linen paper violet-blue clouds are brushed on in layers, and beneath them stands the silhouette of an angular, slightly distorted city. The hand-lettered serif title is expressive, yet every letter can be read. A fine brass-colored experiment diagram lies over it all, with a plum torn-paper label in scientific wording. In 1914, the sky sometimes unfolds like a sheet of writing paper.
Shelley spoke through a cloud: "I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores; / I change, but I cannot die." — Percy Bysshe Shelley, The Cloud (1820)
The cloud changes, but a letter is still a letter. When the sky unfolds, do not hurry to be afraid. Look up first, then write down slowly what you see. The rain will bear witness.
Waiting under the clouds,
Storm Post Office
